KDDI Announces Launch of TELEHOUSE Data Center in South Africa

TOKYO, Dec 4, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - TELEHOUSE EUROPE, KDDI Group's European local subsidiary, will open the data center TELEHOUSE CAPE TOWN in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa (referred to below as South Africa), and launch service on December 2, 2009. This will be the first data center opened by a Japanese telecommunications carrier in Africa.

Located in the city of Cape Town, South Africa, TELEHOUSE CAPE TOWN is a data center boasting high specs that meet TELEHOUSE global standards, which have received high praise throughout the world. The data center will safely store the ICT assets that are indispensible for its customers' businesses in a perfect environment that is managed through a system that incorporates both surveillance equipment and guards making rounds 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Redundant systems are standard for the site infrastructure, and the site is fully equipped with a multiple-route power supply, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and backup generator in case of events such as blackouts. In order to prevent problems, the site also possesses various types of equipment, such as a fire detection system. As a result, the site has even greater capacity to meet needs related to DR(1), BCP(2), and ICT outsourcing, demand for which is growing throughout the world.

Based on a partnership agreement between TELEHOUSE EUROPE and Teraco Data Environment, the first carrier-neutral data center in South Africa, TELEHOUSE CAPE TOWN is located in a data center that Teraco constructed in Cape Town in February 2009.

Teraco is currently constructing a new data center in Johannesburg, and TELEHOUSE EUROPE is moving forward with preparations to use the facility as TELEHOUSE JOHANNESBURG, operation of which is expected to be launched in the spring of 2010.

Developed by KDDI, the overseas data center TELEHOUSE launched services in the U.S. in 1989 and in England in 1990; since then, TELEHOUSE customers have included not only Japanese corporations but also various other businesses including U.S. and European carriers, internet service providers, and Internet exchanges. With the launch of the Cape Town facility, TELEHOUSE will operate 14 sites in 8 regions and 9 cities.

In addition to continuing to develop its business infrastructure, South Africa is steadily growing as a location for not only partnerships with foreign companies as African companies expand in the area but also international sporting events. Melding its business development technology and operational knowhow, KDDI has provided networks and related solutions in Africa, and with the launch of TELEHOUSE CAPE TOWN, KDDI will raise the level of its global ICT solutions, deliver a safer and more secure ICT environment to its customers, and support the global businesses of its customers.

In particular, the plan covers issues such as verifying the safety of employees, ensuring backup systems and necessary people, and securing an alternative office.
