Blowing a Hole through Chinese Walls at Clarksons and RBS

HONG KONG, Dec 30, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - A potentially explosive transcript of a telephone call between shipbroker Clarksons and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) put before the court in the Lakatamia trial, i.e. Polys Haji-Ioannou v Nobu SU, which spanned 4 years, may result in questions being asked as to whether "Chinese walls" were breached back in 2008.

In one transcript from July 2008 it is understood that Nik Waterton of RBS asks Vassilis Karakoulakis of Clarksons about a particular deal and says "I know I shouldn't ask and I know that you can tell me to f..k off if you want to: how did it come about?" After further probing and receiving a somewhat cryptic but presumably revealing response from Vassilis Karakoulakis, Waterton replies "that's interesting".

Waterton's LinkedIn account states that he is with Lloyds Banking Group today and has previously worked on cross-selling the complete RBS derivatives suite to the shipping industry. He presents himself as "an experienced derivatives front office sales professional with a multi asset skill set". After the language he used back in July 2008 he will no doubt call upon his "multi asset skill set" to persuade his bosses at Lloyds that he is a professional. Or maybe he just turned over a new leaf after the financial crisis.
