Hays survey: 84% of Japanese returnees say their international experience gives them an edge in Japan's job market
68% point to their global mindset, and 58% to foreign language skills

TOKYO, Sept 25, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - The vast majority of Japanese returning after time abroad say they have an advantage in seeking work in Japan, due in part to the global mindset and foreign language skills acquired overseas, according to a recent survey by Hays Specialist Recruitment Japan KK ("Hays Japan").

Hays' survey of returnees who studied and/or worked abroad showed that 84% said that their overseas experience is advantageous in job-hunting, in targeting both overseas-headquartered and domestic organizations in Japan.

68% said that the advantage over purely domestic job-seekers stems from the global mindset gained abroad, which better allows them to work with those from other cultures and to understand the various practices and operating styles of the global economy. 58% attributed the advantage to the foreign language skills they acquired, while 25% said the experience allowed them to more rapidly advance within their organization.

Further, 43% said that they would equally consider working for either a foreign-headquartered or domestic organization, in returning to Japan.

Hays Operations Director, Asia, Christine Wright said, "From an employer's viewpoint, we know from speaking particularly with overseas-headquartered clients, that a global mindset is indeed very desirable, and returnees are correct in thinking that it gives them an advantage. More domestic-oriented organizations could also benefit from these soft skills."

49% of surveyed returnees said that they would have returned to Japan for a desirable job offer, while 51% said they would not return only for a job. At the same time, 66% said that they do not think it is a good time for Japanese working abroad to return to Japan.

Christine noted, "It's evident that many people want to return to Japan at some point, and a job offer often brings the incentive. International experience gives candidates a definite edge, so employers need to make solid offers that meet the candidate's requirements."

According to the survey, 41% of those who returned to Japan did so because they had achieved the objectives they had set in living abroad, while 37% cited a work transfer. At the same time, 36% said finding a good job was their greatest concern in returning.

35% of the survey respondents had been away for one to two years, and 23% for three to five years.
