Hays: Attitudes Towards Contract and Temporary Employees Changing in Japan

TOKYO, Oct 2, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - With increasing reliance on these roles and related regulatory changes having come into effect 1 October, employers find that they must more and more cultivate contract and temporary employees in Japan, says Hays Specialist Recruitment Japan KK ("Hays").

For employers, contract and temporary employees can help overcome a skill gaps, fill a short-term staffing need or provide support through a special project - without the commitment of a permanent hire. For employees, contract and temporary roles offer lifestyle advantages and a flexible means of diversifying their professional experience.

There is growing and consistent demand among employees for those willing to consider contract and temporary roles, while employees value placements that offer a positive work environment and an easy transition.

At the same time, important changes to Japan's Worker Dispatch Law, which governs the placement of contract and temporary employees, came into effect 1 October 2012. These changes limit the range and length of contract and temporary roles, and place greater responsibility for compliance on the employer.

As such, employers now more than ever stand to benefit from cultivating these employees and creating an environment in which they can acclimatize quickly and effectively.

Hays Operations Director, Asia, Christine Wright, said, "If you are to get the most out of your contract and temporary employees, you need to make them part of the team. And sometimes it is easy to forget the fundamentals.

"First, set out the objectives of the role and provide the context of the tasks involved, so that they understand the importance and impact of what they are doing.

"Second, explain who they will work with - what each team member does, and how the new role fits.

"Third, explain the internal mechanisms - when and how to communicate with which tools, where to find the information to get the job done, and the rules and how to follow them.

"People in these roles by their very nature hit the ground running, but these simple steps can help ensure that productivity is maximised. By treating them as part of the team, you may also encourage them to stay on if a permanent position opens or another temporary assignment comes up."
