Hays: Abenomics Impact on Hiring Activity

TOKYO, Sept 17, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - Around one third of employers in Japan plan to hire more women and foreign workers as the labour market starts to respond positively to Abenomics, says recruiting experts Hays in Japan.

The recruiter surveyed over 200 employers. Of those employers who plan to expand their headcount, 68 per cent will recruit additional permanent staff, 19 per cent will recruit contract staff, 8 per cent will recruit temporary staff and 5 per cent will recruit for seasonal/one-off project needs.

"While it is still early days, employers do expect to see an increase in overall hiring activity as a result of Abenomics," says Jonathan Sampson, Regional Director of Hays in Japan. "There is a feeling in the market that there is definite potential for an economic revival.

"This seems to support the announcement from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare late last month that employment in Japan hit a record in July. With most hiring managers and HR directors willing to hire permanent staff, we expect to see a gradual increase in hiring activity.

"We are already seeing demand for certain skilled professionals as hiring managers make selective staff investments and replace departing staff," he said.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic policies also involve reforms to bring more women into the workforce. According to Hays' survey of employers, 34 per cent plan to hire more female workers.

"Our survey results validate what we are seeing on the ground, where more hiring managers are open to diversity, in part, as a result of Abe promoting females in the workforce," said Jonathan.

"This acceptance of diversity extends to foreign workers. Of the employers surveyed, 37 per cent plan to hire more foreign workers. But 39 per cent said there are still issues preventing them from increasing the number of foreign workers hired."
