"Fresh, Innovative and Wide-ranging"; Five of 20 Winners at COMPUTEX TAIPEI Design and Innovation Awards 2009 Receive Gold Awards

COMPUTEX, Taipei, June 4, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - The second COMPUTEX TAIPEI design and innovation awards is the result of a cooperation between iF International Forum Design and TAITRA, and is part of the 'organised by iF' initiative. The competition, which was open to the exhibitors at the COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2009 exhibition, and also to all registered IT firms in Taiwan, is divided into seven categories:

- Communication Products
- Components & Parts
- Computer Systems
- Peripherals
- Data Storage Device/Media
- Optoelectronic Display and Digital Audio/Video
- Gaming & Entertainment

The jurors Gerhard Seizer (onizou idea nomads, on world tour), Hiroaki Tanaka (GEO design, Japan), Lawrence Weng (ETM group, Taiwan), Gideon Loewy (Scandinavian Design Consultant, Denmark) and Marc Nagel (Pilotfish Inc., Germany) judged 147 competition entries from four countries according to the following criteria:

- Degree of innovation
- Design quality
- Workmanship
- Choice of materials
- Environmental friendliness
- Functionality
- Utility value
- Safety
- Ergonomics
- Universal design
- Brand value / branding

According to the jury members, "the surprising winners of this year's COMPUTEX TAIPEI design and innovation award represent a variety of fresh and new creations. An amazing development has taken placewe can look forward with excitement to the future of Taiwanese design. Above all, during the current financial crisis, firms need to invest in innovation and design."

The award-winning products from Taiwan will automatically have the right to carry the 'TAIWAN GOOD DESIGN' label. After a registration process with the Taiwan Design Centre (TDC), the winners will receive their GD-mark certification.

This year, the jury did not give a Green Award to any of the competition entries. They would, however, like to encourage companies to go further and think innovatively in this special field.

Entered product: Acer Aspire 3935 - Notebook
Category: 03. Computer Systems

Jury statement: "At last, we are seeing a notebook that is not trying to imitate a 'look'. Its bodywork is made from pure brushed aluminium. The advantage of this materialin addition to the fact that it is a high-quality materialis that it is resistant to smudging by fingerprints. The notebook not only looks like a quality product, it is also based on quality manufacturing and detailing. The various parts in its construction harmonise perfectly with one another, providing design of the highest quality."

Jury statement: "This high-quality product is refined and is a joy to use. In a product area where good design is hard to find, the fantastic design and excellent detailing makes this product really stand out. Even though the parts of the dual tray LCD console drawer are not visible within the housing of the device, they are positioned with great precision. It was this attention to detail that really impressed us as jury members. The product manages to successfully bridge the gap between form and function."

Jury statement: "The design of this system is particularly pure, simple and functional. Thanks to its simplicity, the Digital Signage System can be manufactured at low cost, since it is made of as few elements as possible. The curved metal sheeting gives it an individual character, which is additionally reinforced by its black and white colour scheme. The Digital Signage System proves that, today, less is not only more, but that products of this type can stand out and have the potential to become future design icons."

Jury statement: "This product is about absolutely convincing aesthetic design. The engaging spiral shape elegantly conveys to the user how the device functions. With its sculptural appearance, it is an outstanding design contribution, especially to the accessories market."


Entered product: ZEBEX Z-3130BT - Handy Bluetooth CCD - Barcode Scanner
Category: 04. Peripherals
Company: ZEBEX INDUSTRIES INC., Taipei /Taiwan
Design: AIMEX CORPORATION, Tokyo/Japan

Jury statement: "Above all, the design of this barcode scanner is based on its ergonomics. The elegantly designed device fits perfectly in the hand and is extremely comfortable in use. In addition to the simple design, the soft control button is responsible for the high user-friendliness of the scanner. Its a device that looks friendly rather than technological, making it more suitable for todays retail sector."


The Jury - Short Bios

Gerhard Selzer

Gerhard Selzer was born in 1973, in Ochenfurt, Germany. Since studying product design at the design school in Gmund, Swabia he has worked as a freelance designer at, amongst others, Dr Garnich Design, Zeichen & Wunder and Siemens Design & Messe GmbH. After working as a designer in Japan, in 2006 he set up WILDDESIGN Co., in Shanghai, China. It is one of the leading German service providers in the field of medical design. At the beginning of 2009, Gerhard Selzer founded ONIZOU - IDEA NOMADS - ONIZOU with his partner, and in 2009 will be making a world tour, taking part in various design events around the world.

Gideon Loewy

Gideon Loewy is an international expert on creative design, an architect, lecturer and journalist. For over 25 years he has worked from his Danish studio as a freelance designer and consultant for both the industrial and private sectors. Loewy is the owner of Scandinavian Designers(R), who have had their headquarters in Taiwan since 2002. In 2006 they selected as one of the top 10 industrial design companies in that country. Loewy's works have won countless prizes, such as the iF award, the G-Mark and the Innovalue Excellence.

Hiroaki Tanaka

Hiroaki Tanaka studied industrial design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating, he founded the GEO design agency. Tanaka and his agency have worked with many of the largest Japanese companies, such as Panasonic, Epson, Pioneer and Fuji Film. He has won both the Japanese G-Mark and the Korean Good Design Award many times.

Lawrence Weng

Born in 1964, Lawrence Weng graduated from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the Arts Centre College of Design. In 1991, he started working in the areas of product design and development at I+U design. His clients included Acer, Asus, Canon, HTC, Lenovo and Motorola. He is currently working as the design director of the ETM group. Since 1991 he has won many design awards, iF design awards among them.

Marc Nagel

Marc Nagel studied industrial design at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HfbK). After graduating, he studied 'creation industrielle' (industrial design) at LES ATELIERSEcole Nationale Superieure de Creation Industrielle (ENSCI) in Paris. Before founding Pilotfish in 2000 with Harm-Willem Hogenbirk, he worked as a designer and project manager at WeLL Design Associates / Van Dijk Eger Associates and Godoff Design, where, as senior designer, he won many prizes. Pilotfish is an agency for advanced design and innovation with offices in Munich, Amsterdam and Taipei.
