Council Promotions Continue to Spotlight Hong Kong Services |
HONG KONG, July 2, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) continued its focus on services promotions this past year, enhancing Hong Kong's role as the global gateway to the markets of the Chinese mainland, while reinforcing its value to mainland enterprises going out to the world, according to the Council's 2013/14 annual report. The report was tabled today in the Legislative Council.
Demand for Services
The Central Government's continuing encouragement of outward investment offers a wealth of opportunity for Hong Kong companies, according to Jack So, Chairman of the HKTDC. The HKTDC, he said, sees "great demand" for Hong Kong services "based on our expertise as an international financial centre, wealth-management centre and business-services platform."
Beyond finance, Mr So pointed to Hong Kong services prospects in areas ranging from product design and brand development to international marketing and new technology applications. "The increasing demand from mainland companies for external support to transform and upgrade their businesses represents solid opportunities for relevant Hong Kong companies."
Investment Missions
Fred Lam, Executive Director of the HKTDC, was no less enthusiastic about Hong Kong's role in assisting mainland companies. "Already one of the world's biggest overseas investors, the mainland is expected to invest some US$150 billion yearly by 2015. Much of that will come through Hong Kong." This past fiscal year, the HKTDC organised missions to North America and Europe together with mainland investors and Hong Kong services providers. The missions promoted investment opportunities for mainland enterprises, while spotlighting Hong Kong's services strengths, according to Mr Lam.
Think Asia, Think Hong Kong
Beyond the mainland, the Council targeted the United States with its flagship services promotion for mature markets. "Think Asia, Think Hong Kong," in June 2013, featured events in New York and Los Angeles, attracting more than 3,800 participants, "who heard how US companies can expand their business to Asia, particularly the Chinese mainland, through Hong Kong," said Mr Lam. Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive CY Leung hosted the New York event, the largest Hong Kong promotion ever organised in the US.
Asia's Central Business District
In Hong Kong, HKTDC services promotions "brought the world to our city to reaffirm our role as Asia's central business district," said Mr Lam. These events ranged from the Asian Financial Forum, which drew more than 2,500 financial players and government leaders, to such fast-growing annual events as the Asian Logistics and Maritime Conference, the Asian Licensing Conference and the Business of IP Asia Forum.
Product Promotions
The Council's emphasis on services did not, however, come at the expense of product promotion, according to Mr Lam. "Our exhibitions continued to grow in spite of stiff competition among the world's trade-fair competitors." Indeed, the HKTDC's 35 fairs in fiscal year 2013/14 welcomed more than 35,000 exhibitors, up about four per cent, and more than 755,000 buyers, an increase of 10.5 per cent.
Creating Opportunities
Whether it's product or services promotion, what hasn't changed, added Mr So, is the HKTDC's mission: "to promote Hong Kong business worldwide and to create opportunities for small and medium-size enterprises."
