Panasonic Unveils the First European 'eco ideas' Factory

Plzen, Czech Republic, June 11, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - Panasonic today announces that the plant of Panasonic AVC Networks Czech (PAVCCZ) in Plzen, Czech Republic, has become the first 'eco ideas' Factory in Europe. PAVCCZ started operation as a TV plant in Europe in March 1997 and has produced more than 16 million televisions to date. It will play a crucial role in achieving Panasonics group-wide carbon dioxide reduction target as well as contribute to the environmental development of the city of Plzen and its region.

In October 2008, Panasonic in Europe announced its mid- and long-term environmental sustainability management targets as part of its 'eco ideas' Strategy. Since then, the company has been accelerating environmental initiatives to achieve the numerical targets declared in the strategy such as the reduction of CO2 by 10 percent or 6,000 tons across all its European production facilities. On a global basis, Panasonic pledged to reduce CO2 emissions of all its manufacturing sites by 300,000 tons by March 2010 equivalent to the average emitted by 50,000 European homes every year.

The Czech 'eco ideas' Factory is a model factory; it embodies the Panasonic 'eco ideas' Strategy and surpasses stakeholders' expectations. By collaborating with local communities such as governmental institutions and NGOs, Panasonic's aim is to establish a factory which interacts openly with the general public and conducts business in harmony with local communities. The goal to reduce the CO2 emissions by more than 10 percent from 13.1 thousand tons set in March 2008 has already been exceeded by the TV plant in Plzen, with the achievement of the reduction to 10.6 thousand tons in March 2009.

"The declaration of our first 'eco ideas' Factory in Europe will go a long way to help us meet our carbon reduction targets," says Laurent Abadie, CEO, Panasonic Europe. "Alongside our everincreasing range of environmentally friendly products, our 'eco ideas' Strategy shows we are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our operations."

To contribute to the ecological development of the city of Plzen and its region, the Panasonic plant will engage in the improvement of the local environment by participating in a program to dispose of illegally dumped waste and revitalise green parks. In addition, the Czech TV-factory will undertake tree planting and environmental education events to help enhance the environmental consciousness of students and children at nearby schools jointly with environmental NGOs. As it's essential that Panasonic employees themselves embrace eco-consciousness, all new employees at the plant have signed an agreement in which they commit to undertaking recycling, waste handling and energysaving actions at work.

In addition to driving eco activities in the local community, the Plzen factory promotes the reduction of the overall environmental impact of production processes with a special focus on CO2 and waste emissions. By thoroughly promoting energy-saving initiatives, such as renovation of the energy management systems which maintain the temperature in the factory, the Plzen plant achieved a three-year CO2 reduction target of more than 10 percent whilst also improving productivity. The plant will further accomplish potential energy savings and the reduction of CO2 emissions by installing meters and gauges and strives to achieve the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) initiative and minimise the waste of product components and materials by changing the materials used. As of today 91 percent of all waste materials can be recycled and reused.
