Developing Focused Leadership
Maggie Kelly of Successful Executive Pty Ltd, a sponsor company at the marcus evans HR Summit 2015, on why HR should help the business develop focused leadership.

LONDON, Mar 5, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - "With the often overwhelming demands on our attention and the rate of change, helping the business to develop focused leadership - that is, focusing the leadership on doing what is truly important for the business by getting what matters done to realise the business strategy - is more important than ever before," highlights Maggie Kelly, Managing Director, Successful Executive Pty Ltd.

Successful Executive Pty Ltd is a sponsor company at the marcus evans HR Summit 2015, taking place in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, 23 - 25 March.

- What is troubling HR directors today? How could the HR function improve and better take advantage of growth opportunities?

The speed of change, globalisation, sheer volume of information from multiple sources and the resulting overwhelm creates complexity which makes it challenging, but not impossible, to genuinely assist the leadership with delivering on the strategy and vision for the business.

To cut through the complexity and help the leaders and their teams develop a laser focus to work on what matters most is key. By identifying what is most important to the business and their stakeholders and how this can be actioned via simple but powerful tools and strategies, much can be accomplished.

- How can HR better identify the key attributes and competencies of the leaders, managers and teams? Why should it?

Having the right people in the business is getting the right people that "fit" in the first place. You cannot squeeze a square peg into a round hole - no matter how hard you try. Using a powerful and proven framework to attract the right talent by identifying cultural fit, then what truly motivates them and finally, to continue growing and evolving your people is essential for business success.

Business is built on people first and foremost. It is always the people side which creates the most questions, angst and opportunity in any business. As such, the human element of any business is always the most challenging and when it is working well, the most rewarding.

- How can HR embed "enduring" success? What are the key components?

Building powerful leaders and teams is the backbone of any organisation. This means identifying what specifically makes the leadership successful, making it "visible" and knowing how this can be repeated throughout the business. If success is about individual characters or leaders, then this cannot be replicated. A "star" leader no matter how productive has limited value to the business unless he or she can bring their team with them.

- What tools or methods could HR use to boost productivity and transform how people work?

Productivity can be boosted enormously by understanding what truly motivates leaders and their teams. This in turn can transform how people work, as well as the culture or the environment.

As human beings, we are simple. We will always lean towards the activities which motivate us and avoid those which do not interest us.

The key in an organisation is being able to identify those with accuracy and then focusing the leadership on working to their strengths to deliver on the business strategy.
