Leading International Timepiece Event Opens Next Week

Design Excellence: time to celebrate

This year's Design Competition received close to 200 entries in the Open and Student categories under the respective themes of "Freedom & Peace" and "Sharing".

The winning design in the Open Group was Tam Kwok-tung's GEAR TRACK. This innovative piece is built around moveable lugs that allow a wearer to incorporate different watch cases of different sizes into the design. By also automatically adjusting to the width of any watch strap, this timepiece gives its wearer the freedom to customise and peace of mind through convenience.

Chan Cheuk-yan from the Hong Kong Design Institute emerged as champion of the Student Group with the design for MIS, a watch that records fitness achievement and automatically shares results with other wearers of the same style of watch nearby.

The designs from the finalists in the Design Competition will be displayed next week at the Watch & Clock Fair, which is co-organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Associations Ltd and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades and Industries Ltd. The timepieces will also be showcased at The Mira Hong Kong from 2 to 12 September.

Watching the world

Opening on 8 September, the Watch & Clock Fair will bring exhibitors, buyers and industry experts from around the world to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for five days. For the first time, the fair welcomes exhibitors from Bermuda, Denmark, Lebanon, Russia and Spain.

The concurrent Salon de TE, which spotlights premium watch brands, has grown to include close to 160 brands taking part in its five thematic zones: World Brand Piazza, Chic & Trendy, Craft Treasure, Renaissance Moment and Wearable Tech.

Swiss Brands: time to shine

A feature of the fair this year is the heightened presence of Swiss brands. The Renaissance Moment zone of Salon de TE, which focusses on famous European Brands will include two new pavilions. The Swiss Eminence pavilion will parade the latest designs from such classic brands as Buler, Coinwatch, Cyma, DOXA, Enicar, Rodania and Sultana. Meanwhile, the new SIWP (Swiss Independent Watchmaking Pavilion) will bring exciting new modern timepieces from Charriol, David Van Heim, Etoile, Pilo & Co, Rebellion, Traser and WATCHe.

Right on time

New design innovations will again take centre stage at the fair this year. New product launches will take place throughout the fair by brands such as Kairos, Memorigin, Rodania and Sultana. Various celebrities, including Joe Ma and Myolie Wu in support of Ramago and Temporis respectively, will be on hand to promote the new designs.

Eye on the clock

Signature events throughout the fair include seminars, networking events, parades and more. The Hong Kong International Watch Forum (8 September), the Asian Watch Conference (9 September) and Buyers Forums (10-11 September) all return to the fair to offer experts and professionals opportunities to discuss key developments in the industry.

On the final day of the fair (12 September), the Salon de TE Public Day will feature a range of events tailored to the general public. Public visitors will be able to enjoy watch parades, celebrity events, lucky draws for new watches and more. Admission is free of charge to all public visitors aged 12 or above.

Watching the market

With more than US$10.8 billion worth of imports in 2014, Hong Kong remains the world's largest importer of complete watches and assembled watch movements by value. It is also the second-largest exporter of these products globally, with over US$10.3 billion worth sent around the world in the same period. The top five destinations for these exports are the United States, Switzerland, the Chinese mainland, Macau and Japan.
