Panasonic Asia Pacific Exceeds 2009 Eco Sustainability Target

SINGAPORE, June 1, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Panasonic Asia Pacific ("Panasonic") today announced that it has not only achieved but exceeded its Asia Pacific 'eco ideas' declaration targets set for fiscal 2009 (April 2009 to March 2010). The 'eco ideas' declaration aligns to Panasonic's global theme of environmental sustainability, and supports the group's aim to become the No.1 Green Innovation Company in the electronics industry by 2018.

Highlights of the results from Panasonic's 2009 declaration are:

- Increased percentage of sales contributed by eco products from 24% of total product sales in March 2009 to 49% in March 2010.
- CO2 emissions reduction across its 49 manufacturing sites in Asia Pacific by 37.2% instead of the original targeted 30.8% over three fiscal years from April 2007 to March 2010.
- Set up of three instead of one model 'eco ideas' factories that manufacture eco-friendly products with sustainable industry practices and are utilised in outreach activities to raise the level of eco consciousness in the community. These factories place an even greater emphasis on energy efficiency, waste management and recycling.
- Organised 76 eco-related educational activities and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes to raise public awareness in Asia Pacific. Many of these activities were done in collaboration with business partners, governments and other stakeholders.

"We exceeded our 'eco ideas' declaration targets set in 2009 because we were able to make environmental management central to all our business activities, and adopt the mindset of driving results and accountability," said Mr Ikuo Miyamoto, Managing Director of Panasonic Asia Pacific. "Building on this success and to stay true to our commitment of environmental management, we are now setting a broader and concrete action plan for the next three years from fiscal 2010."

The new action plan, which is part of Panasonic Group's midterm business management plan, will see the company pursue environmental management in two areas - 'eco ideas' for Lifestyles looks into promoting sustainable and comfortable green lifestyles; and 'eco ideas' for Business-styles aims to reduce the environmental impact of business operations to a maximum extent and spread technologies and ideas created through such reduction efforts.

In the new 'eco ideas' declaration, Panasonic pledges to achieve the following by March 2013:

- 'eco ideas' for Lifestyles

-- Increase regional sales contributed by eco products in comparison with the level of the fiscal year ended March 2010 from 49% to 80%. Eco products, internally certified by Panasonic, have achieved high environmental performance in terms of energy saving, effective utilisation of resources and the management of chemical substances.
-- Develop a Panasonic Global ECO LEARNING PROGRAM, following the successful pilot of the Environment Champions (Schools) Industry Module (ECIM) in Singapore. This will be launched in Malaysia and Thailand to enhance awareness of environmental issues among youth and encourage them to take eco action. As part of the ECIM, an Environment Champions Project Competition is being held in Singapore. Seed funding of $20,000 has been handed out to 20 teams of students from primary and secondary schools for them to implement their own 'eco ideas'. The winner of this programme will be awarded a five-day study trip to Japan.
-- Utilise social media platforms to generate eco awareness and inculcate eco habits. It launched the revamped Asia Pacific 'eco ideas' website today along with a regional 'Make a Change' Campaign, which includes an eco advertisement design competition. Three entries with the highest amount of votes stand to win eco-friendly TVs worth S$3,000 each. One winning design will be used by Panasonic in an 'eco ideas' advertising campaign.

- 'eco ideas' for Business-styles -

-- Reduce CO2 emissions by a third or 500,000 tonnes, the equivalent of having planted 28 million rain trees. Panasonic projects that CO2 emissions from its manufacturing bases in the region will hit 1.5 million tonnes by March 2013 if no additional measures are put in place after March 2006. It targets to bring this down to 1 million tonnes.
-- Designate four more model 'eco ideas' factories such that the concept makes presence in all seven countries in Asia Pacific where there are manufacturing facilities.

Panasonic's eco business efforts are recognised on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes and the FTSE4Good index by The Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange.
