Indonesian Undergoes Ground Breaking Surgical Treatment in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Mar 30, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - A team of specialists at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre were the first to carry out an unusual complex jaw surgery followed by dental implants in Southeast Asia. In the past, the treatment would take one year to be completed. However, treatment time was completed in just over three months for Indonesian patient Rudolf Santoso.

Santoso had been diagnosed in December 2009 with Ameloblastoma, a rare tumour that develops in the jaw. Locally invasive, it is normally formed from remnants of cells that develop into tooth enamel. He underwent surgery in his home country to remove 70% of his lower jaw. A metal plate was inserted to replace the jaw bone but this plate became loose and infected. He was unable to speak and eat properly and had a limited normal daily life. Santoso searched for other options and found out about Specialist Dental Group on the internet.

After several email exchanges, Santoso came to Singapore to seek help. The treatment involved three procedures:
1. the removal of the infected metal plate and confirmation that the jaw bone was free of the tumour;
2. the reconstruction of the lower jaw with a predictable bone graft, harvested from Santoso's lower leg; and
3. the insertion of dental implants to anchor a functional lower dentition so that he could eat, talk and have proper facial support.

The multi-disciplinary team was led by Professor Ansgar Cheng (Prosthodontist) of Specialist Dental Group and a team of specialists, namely Dr Ho Kok Sen (Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon), Dr Andrew Loy (Ear Nose Throat Surgeon) and Dr Erik Ang (Plastic Surgeon). Each doctor was in charge of one procedure. The treatment was split into two surgeries, the jaw surgery in June 2010 and the dental implant surgery in September 2010.

Today, half a year after the treatment, Santoso is able to eat properly and look like his former self.
