Hong Kong Readers Should Not "Fear" Author AA Gill
Critic and Essayist to Join Forum at HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair

HONG KONG, June 27, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Controversial critic and essayist AA Gill described himself as a "truth teller" rather than a writer known for being "rude" to his subjects, in a webcast interview with entrepreneur Sir David Tang in London.

The interview, for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's (HKTDC) webcast service, is available at http://www.youtube.com/hktdc. It took place earlier this month prior to their appearance at two writers' forums to be held during the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 20-26 July.

Fearsome Reputation

"I am a little bit like the headmaster's office. I mean if you get sent to me, it's probably because you've done something wrong," he said. Despite his "fearsome" reputation, the British author encouraged the public to ask him questions at next month's open forums in Hong Kong.

Regarding his writing style, Mr Gill said those who consider his prose "odd or difficult" should note that "an awful lot of stuff is made with ramps and wheelchair access for the mind."

Public Forums

Adrian Anthony Gill has gone by the byline AA Gill throughout his career, which currently has him working as restaurant reviewer and television critic for The Sunday Times. He also reviews restaurants for Vanity Fair magazine. His essays are known for their humour and satirical content, and have earned him notoriety among some groups.

Mr Gill will join notable UK novelist and publisher Nicholas Coleridge, food writer Tom Parker Bowles and historian and broadcaster David Starkey, at two Book Fair forums, 22nd and 23rd July, moderated by Sir David.

International Line-up

UK poet Wendy Cope, author Justin Hill, who lives in Hong Kong, and Julia Lovell, who lectures in modern Chinese history and literature at the University of London, will also speak at the fair. Other notable authors taking part include Americans Ridley Pearson and Karl Taro Greenfeld, India's Tabish Khair and Hong Kong's own Xu Xi.

Organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong Book Fair celebrates its 22nd edition this year. The July fair will feature nearly 300 cultural events under the theme "Reading the World, Reading as Self-discovery."
