HONG KONG, July 13, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is focused on helping Hong Kong's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) take advantage of opportunities emerging on the Chinese mainland and select global markets, said HKTDC Chairman Jack So, in the Council's newly tabled annual report for the past fiscal year.
"It is the Council's responsibility to help open these new doors," said Mr So in the report, acknowledging support from the Hong Kong SAR Government, Council members and trade and business associates. "I am certain that we will be able to continue doing so."
The HKTDC annual report for 2010/11 was tabled today in the Legislative Council.

Mr So sees opportunities for Hong Kong's business services sector in light of the mainland's 12th Five-Year Programme. To help promote the sector, the HKTDC launched a major exhibition of Hong Kong services in Guangzhou in May. Called SmartHK, the event spotlighted Hong Kong's creativity, services and technology to the mainland business audience.
HKTDC Executive Director Fred Lam said the annual report reflected the Council's efforts, in 2010/11, to help Hong Kong SMEs realise opportunities in a recovering global business environment.
Measures included the HKTDC SME Start-Up Programme. The initiative was designed to help rekindle Hong Kong's entrepreneurial spirit and encourage SME start-ups to compete in the global marketplace.

Mr Lam also noted the growing importance of technology and creativity as a reason for including multimedia features in the online version of this year's annual report.
The 2010/11 report features, for the first time, video, slide shows and multimedia graphics to provide more information on HKTDC activities in Hong Kong and around the world.
"In its own way, this report is symbolic of the rapidly changing information age that all of us in Hong Kong are now very much a part of," he said.
