Hays: Talent Mobility Can Tackle IT's Skills Gap

TOKYO, Apr 16, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - The mobility of talent across Asia Pacific can ease the IT skills shortage, says Hays Information Technology. But according to Hays, while employers may be slowly embracing this solution, it is far from universally accepted.

According to Hays Information Technology, which has three offices in Japan, finding good people with the right skills remains a challenge for employers across Asia Pacific, despite current global economic conditions.

"Across development, infrastructure and business, organisations are now considering strategies to bridge the skills gap," said Peter Noblet, Senior Regional Director of Hays Information Technology in Asia Pacific.

"One of these strategies is the use of global mobility to move talent not only from city to city but also from country to country. By taking a strategic approach to talent supply across the region as a whole, organisations are able to attract and recruit from a much wider geography.

"It's a strategy we've started to use and it is effective as a means of overcoming local skills shortages. It gives employers an edge in an increasingly competitive skills market and significantly increases the talent pipeline."

Peter notes: "Many organisations are receptive to sourcing talent from overseas to address their skill needs. Some employers who have never considered sponsorship are now considering this option and are looking at candidates through our Hays global network. With offices in 31 countries, we can look at the needs that exist in one country and match these with the talent supply in another. For example, right now we are working with several organisations to actively source specialist talent from not just across Asia Pacific, but as far afield as the UK.

"But other organisations are still resisting global mobility. While it is widely recognised that migration is vital to ensuring economic growth and overcoming skills shortages, it is also a topic that generates heated discussion.

"The irony is that recruiting from overseas can be a simple process, and it is one that, properly done, yields very good results."

Other IT trends:

According to Hays Information Technology, four other trends are impacting Japan's IT recruitment market at present:

- Android mobile platforms are allowing Japanese mobile games developers increased access to the European markets. As a result, employers need developers who use C++ or Java and they will consider candidates without direct experience in gaming development. Some developers will also consider candidates who have had a number of job changes, something not many companies will usually consider.

- There is a big focus from the major consulting firms and software companies for ERP candidates. Candidates are in short supply yet everyone wants a candidate from another tier one company. Candidates are available from tier two with experience on smaller projects and less prestigious clients.

- Although demand is high, employers are not using salaries as a candidate attraction strategy. For most roles candidates should expect only a modest increase in salary

- In contrast to Japan's ageing population, employers look for candidates who will bring down the mean age of the company. But the talent pool in this area is relatively small in comparison to demand.
