AMVC Arquitectos: Achieving Sustainability in the Brazilian Development Market
Vitor Santos Cruz of AMVC Arquitectos, a solution provider company at the upcoming marcus evans Brazilian Infrastructure & Property Development Summit 2012, on the future of the Brazilian development market.

NEW YORK, May 1, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Brazil is on the growth superhighway, with the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics driving its real estate development market to record highs. While some are questioning whether the level of growth is sustainable, Vitor Santos Cruz, Partner at AMVC Arquitectos believes it is. "That potential has been there for a long time. Brazil has a large margin of growth before it reaches a bubble," Cruz says.

Ahead of the marcus evans Brazilian Infrastructure & Property Development Summit 2012, in Bahia, Brazil, 21 - 22 May, Cruz gives the architectural perspective of the Brazilian infrastructure and property development market and sustainable developments.

- The Brazilian infrastructure and property development market is experiencing a boom at the moment. Do you believe it is sustainable growth?

Brazil is in a very good place. The economy is growing. It is hosting the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, which are boosting the local construction market. The good news is that its success goes beyond these events.

Brazil has a population of almost 200 million people. It is an attractive investment and tourism destination, and has many natural resources.

Brazil has a lot to offer. That potential has been there for a long time. It has a large margin of growth before it reaches a bubble or limit, so we expect that growth to be sustainable.

- What initiatives would attract more interest? How can the property market facilitate further growth?

The level of income and quality of life is improving, so the quality of public services must improve as well. This includes hospitals, highways and the relation of construction projects to nature. Biodiversity is one of Brazil's biggest potentials. They must pay more attention to how projects fit into their surroundings. In Europe, people take special care to consider a building's relation to nature. If we want a sustainable world, integrating construction elements to the local area is important.

- What are people demanding of architecture today?

You could say that there is a universal language of what people want, and it is the architect's role to pass on that information or to articulate it to the specifics of each place and according to the clients' demands.

A structure designed for Dubai cannot be replicated in Brazil. This common language must be adapted. It is important to know where you are going to intervene, the goal of the intervention and its relation to the local area. This is key. Projects where the context is not thought out well beforehand have not proven to be sustainable or successful.
