Malaysia Datacentre Sector on Target for Growth

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - The Minister for Human Resources, Datuk Dr S Subramaniam, addressed the 2nd Datacentres Malaysia conference 16-17 January in Kuala Lumpur (www.datacentresmalaysia.com) confirming sustained growth is being achieved by the datacentre sector, and projects have a positive outlook which will contribute RM2.4 billion to gross national income by 2020.

BroadGroup has already undertaken an independent analysis of Malaysia as a global datacentre hub, on behalf of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), using a wide variety of criteria to compare it with leading locations from around the world. On the key issue of power, encompassing everything from costs to quality to regulation, Malaysia was the highest ranked country. Malaysian power costs can be as much as half of prices charged in Europe, and significantly cheaper than other Asian countries.

The country has an abundance of land and space, a skilled workforce and is geographically well located in an earthquake free area. The Malaysian Government view the datacentre sector as a significant contributor to the country's future economic growth and are embarking on a programme to create awareness of, and encourage overseas enterprises entering Asian markets, to consider Malaysia as a primary IT infrastructure location.

"It is not surprising that the choice of location for a datacentre is such an important issue given they are so critical to supporting business and government, and the need for high security and reliability," commented Philip Low, chief executive of BroadGroup who spoke at the event. "What makes the choice so important is that datacentre investment decisions tend to be made for a period of at least 15 years, given the complexity and cost of the build. Malaysia is positioning itself now to take significantly greater regional market share, and offers a range of benefits, including generous grants for qualifying companies, that should be considered by international enterprises who are seeking a data or content hub in the Asia region."

The conference also heard from the leadership of datacentres in both Kuala Lumpur and the digital park, Cyberjaya, who host a number of high specification datacentre facilities that offer competitively priced tailored solutions for companies seeking fast access to regional hosting and managed services.

With around 300 attendees, the conference is the premier datacentre event for Malaysia and is supported by sponsors including MDeC, MSC Malaysia, VADS, Schneider Electric, HP, CSF, Powerware Systems, HDC, AIMS, Akamai, Digital Realty, CBRE, C2Consult, AST Modular, Freenet, Datumstruct and Globeron. Media partners include Finance & Investment for Datacentres, Datacentres.com, Asia Today, Haking, Balkans.com, The Datacenter Journal, thedatachain, BookarLists, Bvents, InfoCom, ECM Plus, Tele Techwire, ConferenceLocate, TechWeekEurope, businessvibes and Digital News Asia.
