JAKARTA, INDONESIA, June 15, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta performed its first ever laparoscopic surgery to remove fibroids from a woman's body on Wednesday, June 12th. The successful surgery was performed by a team of medical experts led by Dr. Setyo Hermanto, SpOG.

The patient, a woman aged 39, Mrs. Suliyem, came with a complaint of uterine myomas (fibroids). "The patient had fibroids weighing more than two pounds. After conducting a thorough examination and a review of her health record, we and her family decided to remove the fibroids through a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) surgery. All the fibroids were completely removed and the patient has since been discharged," said dr. Setyo. Unlike traditional hysterectomies, the use of the advanced technology enabled Dr. Setyo and his highly-trained team to remove only the uterus.

"I was delighted to operate in the spacious and ultra modern operation theater suite of Mayapada Hospital with the latest technological equipment comparable to any top hospital overseas. Now patients need not go to Singapore for these procedures," added Dr. Setyo.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy, also called minimally invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique to remove the uterus that is rapidly gaining popularity because of its Operative Laparoscopy method. It is done through several small incisions in the abdomen. The surgeon inserts a small-lighted tube (called a laparoscope) through an incision in the navel and several other small incisions are made in the abdomen to place the surgical tools needed to perform the surgery. The uterus can then be removed in small pieces through the incisions or taken out through the vagina. Compared with a traditional abdominal hysterectomy, a laparoscopic hysterectomy requires only small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5cm). The surgery also has enormous benefits to the patient including a faster recovery (1-2 weeks as compared to 4-6 weeks through 'open' surgery), less post-surgical pain, less scarring and a lower risk of complications.

Mr. Wijiyanto, the husband of Mrs. Suliyem, expressed his delight on receiving the good news of the successful surgery performed by Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta, which continually displays a commitment to cutting-edge technology in an effort to improve service delivery.

"With the successful completion of this advanced form of surgery, Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta has proven it is well equipped to offer patients laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery. We are proud to announce a new addition to our expansive yet growing list of services," said Brian J. Chen, CFA, President of the Mayapada Healthcare Group.
