Indonesia-Japan Strengthen Defense, Trade and Investment Cooperation

TOKYO & JAKARTA, Mar 24, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Indonesia and Japan agreed on Monday to strengthen defense, trade and investment cooperation, marking the first visit to Japan of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he welcomed the visit of Joko Widodo and the initiative to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Abe said he was pleased that Japan has been the first country outside ASEAN in Asia officially visited by President Jokowi after his installation late last year.

Earlier Jokowi visited Japan after APEC conference in Beijing in November, 2014.

Abe said as democratic and maritime countries, Indonesia and Japan should promote strategic relations.

"I express my hope that Indonesia would expand and play a more important role in this region and the world," he said.

Japan appreciates statement by President Jokowi that Japan is a peaceful country and has greatly contributed to Indonesian economic development.

He said Japan wanted to expand cooperation in this region to solve regional problem including disputes in South China Sea.

On the occasion, memorandums of understanding were signed between Indonesian defense minister, trade minister and the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and their respective Japanese counterparts.

Jokowi said among the potential sectors in which cooperation is expected in development with Japan are power generating, seaport, road infrastructure, toll road and industrial estates.

"Prime Minister Abe welcomed the proposed cooperation that resulted in agreement to promote investment cooperation between Japan and Indonesia," he said.

Cooperation in the maritime sector covers the forming of maritime forum in maritime security, maritime industry and maritime infrastructure, he said. -Antara.
