NEC Introduces Compact LTE Wireless Base Station at Broadband World Forum Europe 2009

TOKYO, Sept 2, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - NEC Corporation announced today the display of its compact outdoor LTE wireless base station at the NEC booth of the Broadband World Forum Europe 2009 (BBWFE 2009)(1) held in Paris, France from 7-9 September.

NEC's new base station features REC (Radio Equipment Controller) control functions with SON (Self Organizing Network) technologies that enable efficient construction and operation of base stations. Moreover, the base station qualifies for the industry's smallest class (449mm width, 490mm height, 145mm depth) and weighs just 17kg, which may be easily transported by a single person and flexibly installed. The removal of cooling fans enables the new base station to consume 75% less power(2) than conventional stations and contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. NEC will provide the new base stations to telecommunications carriers throughout the world while contributing to the efficient construction and operation of next generation networks.

LTE is a mobile communications standard that represents a significant advancement over the HSDPA/HSUPA(3) family of W-CDMA technologies. LTE systems are being developed in order to deliver high-speed data transmission rates of more than 100Mbps-downlink and 50Mbps-uplink, to improve latency and to enhance the efficiency of frequency use. LTE is currently moving towards standardization promoted by 3GPP(4), a standardization body for mobile communication systems. NEC's LTE wireless base stations are built in compliance with 3GPP mobile communications standards.

Looking forward, NEC will continue with research and development that contributes to the creation of advanced mobile networks using next generation communications systems.

(1) Broadband World Forum Europe 2009 (BBWFE 2009): The BBWFE 2009 will be held from 7-9 September in Paris, France at the CNIT La D?fense and features a collection of telecommunications carriers and telecommunication equipment vendors under one roof. The event is organized by the IDC with NEC providing support and exhibits. (Booth #421)

(2) Maximum power reduction of 70%, under normal operating conditions (3 sectors, 3RE for 1 REC), compared to NEC's existing W-CDMA products' power consumption.

(3) High-Speed Uplink Packet Access: 3GPP standardized technology for accelerating packet communications up to a maximum of 5.7Mbps.

(4) 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP): A partnership project that produces detailed specifications for IMT-2000 W-CDMA. Specifications created by the 3GPP are in accordance with standards established throughout a wide range of countries. The 3GPP is composed of companies and organizations that span the globe, including some of the world's most influential mobile telecommunications companies.
