JAKARTA, Sept 29, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - PT Garuda Maintenance Facilities (GMF) AeroAsia, the subsidiary of state-owned PT Garuda Indonesia, on Monday inaugurated Hangar 4, dubbed as the world's biggest narrow-body hangar.
The Hangar 4 has an area of 67,022 square meters of which 6.4 thousand square meters is production area and 17.6 thousand square meters is office area, President Director of the airline company PT Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo stated during the inauguration of the hangar at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
"The Hangar 4 has a capacity of simultaneously maintaining 16 narrow-body aircraft, with one bay serving as the painting facility," he remarked, pointing out that the maintenance service covers light and heavy maintenance, winglet modification, structure improvement, interior modification, painting, and others.
He noted that utilization of Hangar 4 would be carried out in stages and would reach its full capacity of 16 slots by 2018. In 2016, he stated that 209 maintenance projects would be carried out at the hangar, and the number would increase to 250 in 2017 and 313 in 2018.
He projected that in the next three years, 438 workers would be involved in the maintenance service at Hangar 4. In 2016, the number is projected to reach 121, and 79 more would be added in 2017, while the number is expected to reach 238 in 2018.
"In line with the increasing activities, GMF AeroAsia's capacity and income from the development of Hangar 4 is expected to also increase," he affirmed.
Arif stated that with the presence of Hangar 4, maintenance projects are expected to increase by 145, or 87 percent until 2018, while the income is expected to increase by US$86 million, or 150 percent from the current GMF revenue.
"Right now, the current income generated from servicing narrow-body aircraft is recorded at US$57 million, and so, with the new hanger, the income is projected to reach US$144 million," he revealed.
He noted that the decision to increase the capacity of Hangar 4 has been taken on the basis of GMF's support to the Garuda Quantum Leap program, according to which Garuda and Citilink, Garuda's subsidiary airline, plan to operate 241 medium, regional jets and turboprop aircraft by 2020.
"We hope that in the future, Hangar 4 would obtain the Green Building certification from the Green Building Council in Indonesia followed by an international certification," he added.
