Indonesian Engineers Should be Competitive Internationally

JAKARTA, Dec 12, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Engineers in Indonesia should be able to compete with foreign workers, especially in building infrastructure in the country, according to Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

"Currently, everyone thinks that the engineers in Indonesia are unable to compete with foreign engineers. I say they should be able to. As long as they are trying their best, I say there will always be a way," Kalla remarked while opening the 20th Congress of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) here on Friday.

Drawing reference to the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Poso, Central Sulawesi, done entirely by local workers, the vice president then encouraged and challenged Indonesian engineers to be innovative.

Based on his experience, Kalla said the government as well as the entrepreneurs and professionals must have the determination and courage to take on risks and create a policy.

"Without the courage to take up risks, this country will not move ahead. Therefore, the engineers in Indonesia should be able to compete with foreign workers to build this nation," he emphasized.

The vice president affirmed that the engineers in Indonesia should not be afraid to innovate but should have the courage and determination to move forward.

He pointed out that a government without entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs without professionals cannot go ahead with development projects as employers also need professionals.

In the face of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to be implemented in January 2016, the vice president stated that there was no reason to be concerned about the influx of foreign engineers into Indonesia.

"I am never worried about the entry of foreign engineers into Indonesia. The theory is very simple as the trend moves from countries where salaries are low to countries offering high salaries. Therefore, what I am concerned is that the engineers in Indonesia will opt to work in countries where high salaries are offered," he added. --Antara.
