Residential Air Conditioner Recycling Fee to be Revised Due to Improvement in Recycling Cost

TOKYO, Feb 12, 2016 - (JCN Newswire) - Effective April 1, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Corporation, a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), will decrease the fee charged for recycling the company's residential air conditioners. The recycling fee applied to home air conditioners is one of a number of charges levied in Japan in order to recycle specified types of discarded home appliances, based on the country's Home Appliance Recycling Law.

Currently, the fee imposed for recycling home air conditioners is 1,404 yen (approx. US$12). Commencing April 1, the new fee will be 972 yen (approx. $8).

The new fee will apply in either of the following two cases: 1) when the issue date of the recycling coupon (i.e. the date when the air conditioner is received from the customer) is not earlier than March 31, 2016 and the date when the item is to be handed over to the specified recycling exchange is April 1, 2016 or later; 2) when the issue date of the recycling coupon is earlier than March 31, 2016 and the date when the item is to be handed over to the specified recycling exchange is May 1, 2016 or later.

As a transitional measure, the old fee will apply in the following case: when the issue date of the recycling coupon is earlier than March 31, 2016 and the date when the item is to be handed over to the specified recycling exchange is, at latest, April 30, 2016.

The above fee is imposed per unit of air conditioner on a uniform basis nationwide. Additional charges are required for collection and transport by retail operators, municipal agencies, etc.
