SDK Publishes "CSR Report 2010"

TOKYO, Sept 7, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has published a report detailing its wide-ranging activities based on the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on its website. The "CSR Report 2010" presents feature articles explaining how the Showa Denko Group is contributing to environmental protection and promoting recycling.

As from this year, the printed version is provided as a digest, which we hope is easier to read and understand. Meanwhile, the website version contains more detailed information in addition to the contents of the printed version. The "CSR Report 2010" has been prepared in Japanese, English and Chinese.

The CSR Report for this year contains feature articles as summarized below:

1.Contribution to a sustainable society

While the Group is aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (2008-2012) by 6% from 1990 levels, it achieved an 11% reduction from 1990 levels in terms of the average for 2008 and 2009.

In 2010 and after, as a result of the installation of modern cracking furnaces at our Oita Complex and highly efficient production facilities at other sites, we will be able to achieve GHG reductions of 6% or more on the average during the commitment period without relying on emissions trading.

Furthermore, through accumulation and integration of its individualized technologies, the Group is developing products and technologies that contribute to the conservation of energy and resources: for example, organic EL devices, silicon carbide epitaxial wafers, and lithium-ion battery components.

2.Dialogue with communities through recycling activities

The Report introduces the Group's ammonia production from used plastics (collected from homes) and aluminum can recycling activities, describing how the Group is interacting with local communities through these operations.

The Showa Denko Group will continue managing its operations based on the principles of CSR. The Group is aiming to fulfill its social responsibility by ensuring its coexistence with the global environment and contributing to a sustainable society.
