Hong Kong Licensing Show Attendance Up 10 Per Cent; Ninth Edition of HKTDC Fair Draws More than 15,000 Visitors

HONG KONG, Jan 14, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - The ninth edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Licensing Show, which closed 12 January, attracted more than 15,000 visitors, a 10 per cent increase over last year. Beyond Hong Kong, visitors came from the Chinese mainland, the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, India, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

Raymond Yip, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC, said the strong turnout indicates that next year's event will bring even more industry players to Hong Kong. "Hong Kong is an ideal platform for licensing business because of its international and mature legal system, world-class business support services and experienced professionals with strong connections," said Mr Yip. Mr Yip said he was encouraged to see buyers from emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the mainland and Southeast Asia. "Their presence alongside visitors from traditional markets indicates an increasing recognition of the licensing business worldwide," he added.

Major Deals Signed

The show, which ran 10-12 January at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, showcased more than 500 properties from 140 companies. Buyers and sellers explored business and struck deals during the event. One such agreement was reached between South Korea's largest animation company, Sunwoo Entertainment, and Denmark's Kidz Entertainment. The two companies signed a two-year contract, which is expected to earn the Korean company HK$10 million in royalties. Kidz Entertainment hopes to sell licensed products featuring characters from the Korean cartoon Mix Master Final Force to Eastern European customers. Sunwoo Entertainment's production Mix Master Final Force aired on South Korea's KBS Channel 2 last May, with additional broadcasts by major domestic channels such as Cartoon Network and Tooniverse. The production is expected to attract more licensing deals, as it premieres in 22 countries in Asia this year.

A Sporting Chance

Sports licenses were also a hot item for agents like Brazil's Marco Antonio Siqueira. CEO of Zebra Sport Marketing, Mr Siqueira said his homeland is hosting the World Cup 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games. He said the Brazil's licensing industry hopes to work with suppliers from Hong Kong and the mainland. "They provide quality products at reasonable prices, and their high efficiency would help Brazilian retailers," said Mr Siqueira.

Hong Kong's New Era Cap Co Ltd has become a licensed manufacturer of various Brazilian football club caps, and Mr Siqueira expects more Hong Kong suppliers will partner with Brazilian companies in the future. He said quality premiums and gifts such as pins and key rings are in demand, but few Brazilian suppliers can respond to the need. "We need the services Asian suppliers can provide," he said.

Enhancing Licensing Show opportunities were three concurrent fairs: the 37th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong Toys and Games Fair, the second HKTDC Hong Kong Baby Products Fair and the 11th Hong Kong International Stationery Fair.
