ST-Ericsson's Thor(TM) Modem Brings Industry-leading Speed to US Customers through Samsung's Infuse(TM) 4G Smartphone

GENEVE, CH, May 19, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S.(1), has selected ST-Ericsson's Thor(TM) advanced HSPA+ modem to bring lightning-fast connectivity to its new Infuse(TM) 4G(2) smartphone for the US market.

The Infuse 4G is the latest in a succession of Samsung smartphones to incorporate the groundbreaking Thor M5720 modem. Containing just two chips, the Thor M5720 is highly integrated, keeping cost, power-consumption and size to a minimum.

Mobile operators worldwide are upgrading their HSPA networks to HSPA+. The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSMA) forecasts at least 150 live commercial HSPA+ networks by the end of 2011.

ST-Ericsson's field tests with operators have found that 64-QAM technology can increase a network's spectral efficiency by 30%, enabling operators to carry more data traffic without impinging on their customers' experience.
