Hong Kong is World's Greatest Food City: Author Parker Bowles
Food Writer to Join Forum at HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair in July

HONG KONG, June 20, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Hong Kong's reputation as a culinary capital is as solid as its ranking alongside financial giants such as London and New York, according to author Tom Parker Bowles. The food writer spoke with entrepreneur Sir David Tang in London prior to their appearance at a 22 July forum during the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair.

"Hong Kong is arguably the greatest food city in the world," he said in an interview with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) webcast service, available at http://www.youtube.com/hktdc. "It is certainly the best Cantonese food in the world, and I'd say with New York and London now in terms of spread."

Strong Food Culture

Saying Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland have a "very, very strong food culture," Mr Parker Bowles said his native United Kingdom is finally recovering some of its lost culinary heritage. "We lost everything between the industrial revolution and World Wars," he said. "Basically we lost our connection with the land. What we find now in London is a new British food coming in, so it's Fergus Henderson, there is Mark Hix, and suddenly you can hold your head up again."

Mr Parker Bowles is the son of Britain's Duchess of Cornwall (formerly Camilla Parker Bowles), and his stepfather and godfather is Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. He has been a food writer and broadcaster for the past decade, and recently became Food Editor at Esquire magazine. Mr Parker Bowles has published several books, including E Is For Eating - An Alphabet of Greed, and Full English: A Journey Through the British and Their Food. The latter earned him the Guild of Food Writers 2010 award. He is currently working on a compendium of his favourite recipes called Let's Eat. A guide written for amateur cooks, it's scheduled to be published next year.

Mr Parker Bowles will join notable UK novelist and publisher Nicholas Coleridge and critic and essayist AA Gill, along with historian and broadcaster David Starkey, at the Book Fair forum.

Cultural Highlights

UK poet Wendy Cope, author Justin Hill, who lives in Hong Kong, and Julia Lovell, who lectures in modern Chinese history and literature at the University of London, will also speak at the fair. Other notable authors taking part include Americans Ridley Pearson and Karl Taro Greenfeld, India's Tabish Khair and Hong Kong's own Xu Xi.

Organised by the HKTDC, the 22nd edition of the Hong Kong Book Fair runs 20-26 July, and will feature nearly 300 cultural events under the theme "Reading the World, Reading as Self-Discovery."
