Novelist, Publisher Nicholas Coleridge Eyes China Market
Conde Nast Managing Director to Join Hong Kong Book Fair Forum

HONG KONG, June 29, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - The Chinese mainland is becoming an "extremely important" market for international publishers, novelist and publisher Nicholas Coleridge said in a recent interview with entrepreneur Sir David Tang in London.

"China has become, in the last ten years, an extremely important market," said Mr Coleridge, adding that the country is "going to be one of the big markets for us along with America, Italy and Britain." Mr Coleridge is managing director of magazine publishing house Conde Nast in the United Kingdom, and also oversees the company's operations in India and France.

Mr Coleridge was interviewed in London on 16 July for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's (HKTDC) webcast service, available at http://www.youtube.com/hktdc.

He will take part in open forums during the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 20-26 July. Joining Mr Coleridge at the forums on 22 July and 23 July will be noted critic and essayist AA Gill, food writer Tom Parker Bowles and historian and broadcaster David Starkey. Sir David will moderate the forums.

Hungry Readership

Conde Nast already has a strong presence on the mainland, where it publishes Chinese language editions of several of its magazines including Vogue, Self, Modern Bride and GQ.

"The appetite amongst this growing Chinese audience to buy fashion magazines and to take part in the growth of luxury fashion and luxury goods is phenomenal," said Mr Coleridge. Asked about his own writing, Mr Coleridge said he continues to work on "big multi-character sagas" which take place over decades.

"The new one I am writing about, the as-of-yet untitled new novel, is like a modern day version of Vanity Fair," he said.

Book Launch

The Hong Kong Book Fair will also showcase other celebrated including Julia Lovell, who lectures in modern Chinese history and literature at the University of London. Ms Lovell will launch her new book The Opium Wars on 20 July. Also speaking at the fair will be UK poet Wendy Cope and author Justin Hill, who lives in Hong Kong, as well as Americans Ridley Pearson and Karl Taro Greenfeld, India's Tabish Khair and Hong Kong's own Xu Xi.

Organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong Book Fair celebrates its 22nd edition this year with nearly 300 cultural events under the theme "Reading the World, Reading as Self-discovery."
