Social Media in Media Relations: Companies Still Struggling to Adapt

SINGAPORE, June 21, 2010 - (ACN Newswire) - Despite the seemingly widespread adoption of social media in corporations today, companies are still wrapping their minds around its use in the less-mentioned realm of media relations.

According to findings by Kok Yin Yin, Conference Producer at Pacific Conferences, companies still grapple with addressing negative sentiment propagated through social media, a lack of central control, as well as a lack of effective engagement with stakeholders. Determining and justifying the appropriate resources to allocate is also a challenge, as is the measurement of public opinion via social media.

Echoing this is Raymond Francis, Director of Communications of Boeing International Corporation. "The media landscape in the Asia-Pacific is going through a period of significant change. The emergence of social media and the pervasiveness of the internet mean that every single netizen now has the power to enhance or damage a brand's credibility with a few keystrokes," he says.

Francis will be moderating a panel at a media relations conference in Singapore that, amongst other topics, will look at how companies can engage the media. The Hong Kong panel will be moderated by Sajin Varghese, Regional Director Corporate Communications, Philips Electronics. Both will be joined by editors and panelists from SPH, TIME, Radio Television Hong Kong and more.

In its 8th series, the media relations conference will be held in Singapore and Hong Kong on 12 - 13 and 15 - 16 July respectively to address critical issues such as boosting corporate branding with integrated media plans, pitching to the relevant media, managing social media backlash online & offline, as well as measuring social media ROI. Supporting case studies include those from HSBC, Cisco, Paypal, Sandisk, and the automobile and FMCG industries.

Endorsers of the event include the Institute of Public Relations of Singapore, Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals' Association and the Public Relations Consultants' Associations of Malaysia and India.
