HKTDC to Help Local SMEs Capitalise on New Five-Year Plan
Series of Events and Initiatives to be Launched on the Mainland

HONG KONG, Mar 24, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will organise a wide variety of events and offerings to help Hong Kong companies take advantage of opportunities expected to arise from China's new Five-Year Programme. The new economic blueprint, which was passed at this month's plenary meeting of the National People's Congress, will shape major economic developments on the Chinese mainland between 2011 and 2015.

"Tremendous Opportunities"

While the plan is designed to bring about fundamental changes to the country's development model, it will also offer tremendous opportunities for Hong Kong industry, both the manufacturing and services sectors," said HKTDC Assistant Executive Director Raymond Yip, speaking today at a press conference. "Hong Kong companies should ride on the plan, along with the privileges brought by the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Cooperation Agreement and the Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Cooperation, to expand their business in the mainland market." Mr Yip added that there may well be heightened interest in Hong Kong services, given that the city is the mainland's window for procuring technological products, energy-saving technology and professional services. "The HKTDC will match Hong Kong services providers and mainland enterprises according to their business needs," said Mr Yip.

SmartHK in Guangzhou

"The HKTDC will be organising a series of events to help Hong Kong companies build partnerships and customer-base on the mainland," said Mr Yip. The first promotion, SmartHK, will take place in Guangzhou, 12-13 May. "More than 150 Hong Kong companies, covering a wide range of services and technology to help mainland enterprises move up the value chain, will join SmartHK," he said. The two-day event will include an exhibition showcasing the creativity, services and innovative technology of Hong Kong companies, along with a symposium and business-matching meetings.

In May and in November this year, the HKTDC will hold Mainland-Hong Kong Services Industry Symposia in Chengdu and Hong Kong respectively. The gatherings offer networking and business matching for service users and providers from Hong Kong and the mainland.

The HKTDC's "Creativity in Business" seminar series, launched in 2009 in the PRD, will expand to other provinces, including Fujian and Zhejiang, this year. As well, the HKTDC and the Law Society of Hong Kong will hold a series of legal workshops in June in such major PRD cities as Zhongshan, Foshan, Jiangmen and Dongguan to promote Hong Kong's legal expertise.

Style Hong Kong

The HKTDC, which has been organising Style Hong Kong shows on the mainland since 2007, will continue the programme this year. "In addition to January's Guangzhou show, the HKTDC will feature Style Hong Kong shows in Chengdu, Beijing, Harbin and Changchun," said Mr Yip, who advised Hong Kong companies to use the shows to reach potential mainland customers. The Design Gallery in Beijing, opened in 2009, and the DG Online Shop, launched last June, also help promote Hong Kong-designed products to mainland consumers. More than 90 Hong Kong brands are featured on the DG Online shop.

Environmental and Technology Promise

The new Five-Year Programme emphasises environmental protection and energy-saving, areas in which Hong Kong can serve as an intermediary between overseas companies and mainland manufacturers. "In this regard, the HKTDC's annual Eco Expo Asia can help service and product suppliers develop new business partnerships," Mr Yip said.

To help Hong Kong SMEs respond to the growing technology demand from the mainland, the HKTDC will organise more missions to technology-rich countries in Europe, North America and northeast Asia. Throughout the year, HKTDC research reports and SME seminars will spotlight opportunities likely to develop as the plan is implemented.
